Demian, a boy raised in an orphanage, eventually learns that his benefactor was in fact his biological father. Seeking to escape the influence of that powerful family, he volunteers for a foreign war. On a barren battlefield where he has no clear purpose or reason to survive, his life takes an unexpected turn when he begins receiving a letter—soft and warm like a spring breeze.
The sender is a young noblewoman named Lintrey, who describes herself as an unremarkable lady living quietly in the countryside. What begins as a chance exchange of letters slowly becomes Demian’s only comfort, and over time, the unseen woman becomes the reason he wishes to keep living.
However, after an unforeseen incident leads to his discharge, Demian travels to the address she once wrote from, only to learn that the estate burned down long ago. Worse still, those who remain claim that Lintrey, if she ever existed at all, died in that fire.
Faced with conflicting truths and a burned-down mansion, Demian is left uncertain whether Lintrey was ever real. Refusing to accept her death, he heads to the capital city of Nihiro in search of answers—and of the woman who gave him his first reason to hope.
